Brexit - The Way Forward

Image
Let’s look at the facts about Brexit, as of today 23 October 2018, and the way forward for Brexit: THE FACTS The UK will leave the EU at 2300 hrs on 29 March 2019 unless something happens to stop or delay departure .  That's not much more than 5 months away. This is two years after the Withdrawal Notification was made under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty This notification was made 9 months after the Referendum, but still without a clear Brexit plan, and certainly not one that had widespread agreement Jeremy Corbyn wanted to make that notification the day after the referendum took place, with absolutely no planning.   Brexit is still official Labour Party policy.   When the Withdrawal Notification was made, e deadline for a deal was set for last week’s EU Summit   This is because this is only the first step in a multi-step approval process within the EU27, which all takes time and where approval of a draft deal is not guaranteed.  As the BBC ...

What Are Theresa May's Brexit Options?

Image
Theresa May now has three options, not jist the first two: A 'Deal Brexit'   A 'No-Deal Brexit' To Stop Brexit (1) A DEAL BREXIT A Deal based on the Chequers Plan has effectively been rejected by the EU27 at this week's summit.  From the outset of the Article 50 notification, this summit was supposed to be when the 'Deal Brexit' was approved for onward approval by the various EU27 bodies that would still need to do so. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, has stated the obvious that there should be a "significant difference between a membership of the EU and a partnership with the EU as a third country".  But the UK's negotiators have not understood that. The prospect of a 'Deal Brexit' is as good as dead. In any case a 'Deal Brexit' based on the 'Chequers Plan' also has little support at home: Brexiters regard it as inadequate.  Steve Baker has suggested some 80 MPs could reject it Remai...

10 Broken Promises on Brexit

Image
This morning I recei v ed an email containing this list of Broken Promises about Brexit from Leave campaigners.  These are typical of what I mean by 'lies and deceit' in my recent tweets. "A cross-party group of MPs has challenged the government to explain how 10 key promises made during the referendum will be kept. They ask how Brexit can: Have the "exact same benefits" as we get from EU membership Be fully negotiated by March 2019 Produce a dividend from Europe worth £350m per week for our NHS Result in new trade deals from day one after leaving Deliver more jobs and higher wages across the UK Mean no payments for access to the Single Market Ensure an end to free movement in March 2019 Fully protect the integrity of the UK End austerity Mean a complete end to EU rules and regulations from March 2019? These are benchmarks against which any Brexit deal must be judged. And if these promises are not kept, the cou...

Brexit - An Open Letter to Theresa May 24 September 2018

Dear Mrs May As I am someone who has been your constituent for many years, the current situation on Brexit upsets me greatly.   You are a fine  constituency MP, but in danger of becoming known as " She Broke Britain ".  Unless you change tack quickly. We met in one of your clinics, and your response across the desk was rapid and thoughtful. Your continued involvement with local matters is commendable given your Prime Ministerial responsibilities.  Which is more than can be said for some of your Tory colleagues nearby who do not have any ministerial workload. But you are now throwing all that respect and goodwill away.  Brexit and the negotiations are an unmitigated disaster.  Your legacy as Prime Minister is in danger of being “ She Broke Britain ” Looking back at some of your speeches in recent years, here you were as an MP apparently in touch with ordinary people and their concerns.  In particular your speech at the Bank of England on...
